B2 Atelier is pleased to present Lotus Reverie, a solo exhibition by Lihong Zhang.

Zhang’s practice centers on the lotus — a motif deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy and personal heritage. Through luminous colour, fluid brushwork, and subtle abstraction, she reinterprets Impressionist traditions within a contemporary framework. Light and atmosphere dissolve fixed form, allowing the flower to emerge as both subject and symbol.

In these works, the lotus becomes more than botanical study; it embodies resilience, harmony, and quiet spiritual awakening. Surrounded by layered greens and reflective surfaces, each bloom exists within a contemplative space that bridges memory, culture, and sensation.

Within Lotus Reverie, Zhang invites the viewer into stillness. The paintings offer a moment of pause — where nature, identity, and light converge in serene, enduring presence.

Lihong Zhang

Lihong Zhang is a Melbourne-based artist born in Beijing, China. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Design and later pursued advanced studies in contemporary painting at The University of Melbourne.

From an early age, Lihong developed a deep love for painting. As a child, she studied at the Beijing Youth Palace, where she received a National Painting Award — a formative and memorable milestone that affirmed her commitment to art. Today, she continues to nurture her creative vision between her studios in Melbourne and Beijing.

Influenced by the work of Claude Monet, Lihong immersed herself in the study of Impressionist painting in Beijing in 2015, dedicating a year to refining her understanding of light, colour, and atmosphere. Since relocating to Australia, she has become an active member of the Victorian Artists Society, participating in numerous exhibitions and art fairs.

The lotus has become the central motif of Lihong’s current practice — a subject that reflects both her cultural heritage and her evolving exploration of modern Impressionism. Instantly recognisable for their luminous colour palettes and expressive brushwork, her lotus paintings embody a distinct visual language.

In Eastern philosophy, the lotus symbolises purity, resilience, harmony, and spiritual awakening. Through this motif, Lihong evokes the calm and contemplative essence of Oriental Zen while reinterpreting Impressionism through a contemporary lens. Her compositions often exist in subtly abstracted, dreamlike settings, where gestural shorthand and emotive textures enhance — rather than diminish — the flower’s sensual beauty.

Often working late into the night, Lihong channels dreams and nocturnal reflections into her paintings. Drawing from both Eastern and Western cultural influences, her work becomes a bridge between worlds — past and present, tradition and modernity.

Each piece reflects her enduring passion for art, nature, and cultural identity. Through her lotus imagery, Lihong invites viewers to find serenity and perseverance amid life’s challenges, offering not only beauty, but quiet strength.
