In Summer I, Zhao Mengge draws from the compositional rhythms and symbolic chromatic language of ancient Chinese mural traditions, translating them into a contemporary painterly vocabulary defined by impasto, gestural contour, and tactile density.
The composition depicts a group of young female figures gathered beneath lush foliage, their bodies intertwined in a circular formation that evokes both intimacy and ritual. Rather than naturalistic representation, Zhao constructs the figures through expressive line and sculptural brushwork, allowing contour to dominate over volume. The thick application of oil creates a relief-like surface, reinforcing the connection to mural heritage while grounding the work firmly in the present.
The palette—vibrant greens, warm earth tones, and vivid accents of red and blue—creates a sense of vitality and seasonal abundance. Yet beyond its apparent pastoral serenity, the work carries deeper thematic resonance. The female body is neither objectified nor idealized; instead, it exists as a symbol of collective presence, autonomy, and shared experience.
Through the convergence of historical reference and contemporary expression, Summer I becomes both homage and reinterpretation, a space where memory, femininity, and cultural continuity unfold within a modern painterly language.
